Plans for LGBTQ+ rights celebrations in Seattle amid next summer’s FIFA World Cup tournament will continue unabated, even after Iranian and Egyptian soccer associations raised objections about a scheduled “Pride Match.”
Local organizers have confirmed they are “moving forward as planned” with Pride activities in the city center. This coincides with the Group G match between Egypt and Iran on 26 June. Additionally, the tournament's governing body has a policy allowing Pride flags to be brought into the match venue.
“In our role as hosts, our role is to get the city ready to host the matches and oversee the city experience beyond the match venue,” stated the vice-president of communications.
Homosexuality is illegal in Iran, while in Egypt, public decency statutes are frequently employed to target and prosecute individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. Egypt's football association stated it did not want to be linked to events that “directly contradict the social, religious and cultural values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” Similarly, the head of Iran's soccer body publicly registered “objections against the issue.”
Fifa maintains operational control over match venues during games. While it prohibits banners and flags with political messages, it permits flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” which explicitly includes the rainbow flag. This policy was applied at the previous tournament in Qatar and was reaffirmed after incidents of flags being seized.
The Pacific Northwest hosts one of the nation’s most prominent communities of Iranian descent, a thriving Egyptian diaspora, and diverse populations representing all nations. “Our commitment is to guaranteeing all residents and visitors encounter the warmth, respect and dignity that defines our region,” organizers added.
